Bradford Pear

We have four Bradford Pears, one of which was severely
damaged by high winds this summer. The trees had been
previously thinned, but not cut back. These trees are
getting rather tall. Can they be cut back to about half
height? I have been told "No" they must be thinned. I
am afraid I am going to lose them in the first violent
spring storm. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
