Fickle Ficus Future

I have a Ficus apx 6 feet tall from the roots. It is in a 1/2 Oak Wiskey barrel. The roots are above the dirt line apx 3-4 inches. First off is that something I should correct? If so how would you suggest doing it. Secondly I would like an opinion on the proper trimming. It has made several "moves" in the last 2 years. Different states and climates. It is hanging in but I would like to help it. Also should I use any specific food or fertilizer?
