Trimming a Pomegranate tree

I have a very old, very beautiful Pomegranate tree in my backyard. When I moved into my home, the branches were (and still are) unruly. The tree has dropped its leaves and most of the fruit is removed ( only the unreachable fruit is left for the birds) The trees is about 20 to 25 feet high and I've never known when is the right time to trim the branches. Should I trim now or is there a better time. I will only remove the branches that are intertwined within the mass of the tree unless you suggest otherwise. I'd hire a professional trimmer but I think this is something I can handle. Thanks for the help.
