my employer was frustrated by the expense of workers comp too. He talked to his insurance agent, who found a policy to cover the same types of situations without going thru state program. We have one policy on the job and a second hmo polcy for regular dr visits and such.
I don't know the details of the law, but I assume this is kosher, and a couple of different injuries on ouer crew have been taken care of with no problems (for the injured man, anyway). I'd guess it still isn't cheap, but it must be cheaper than the alternative or we wouldn't have it.
