black sugar maple trunks

I have noticed several young sugar maples with black colored trunks. The coloring seems to be in conjunction with sap leaking from small diameter holes that I assumed were wood borer infestations, but I have been told that this is the work of sap suckers. Any help with diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John.
