There is no real harm in leaving the stump, however, the stump from the live tree will probably resprout with numerous root and stump sprouts. This can be remedied by applying a cut stump herbicide with an oil carrier that is capable of penetrating the bark on what ever is left of the stump. Otherwise you will have to continue snipping off the sprouts until the stump uses up all of it's stored energy (sugars) that are stored in the root system. Eventually you will end up with a hole anyway when the stump rots away.
Good Luck!!
