Leaving Tree Stump after Tree Removal

Hi:
I had two trees taken down yesterday. A dead elm and a box elder that was looking sick.
I did not have the stumps removed because it would have left a big hole in my yard.
Can you tell me what harm can be done by leaving the stumps? Should they be treated with something in order to prevent termites?
At the base of the elm tree I have three Yucca Plants.
I did not want to lose them, therefore I left the stump.
Does it do any harm to leave the stumps?
