A more tree-friendly ground cover than grass

Can anyone suggest a ground cover that is less competitive with tree roots and non-alleleopathic. I'm trying to find an alternative for clients who want to give their trees a better advantage in the ground cover department, but aren't quite ready to leave a leaf litter layer within the driplines.
