I don't think you are nuts, at all! You could call it the
Rudnick Arboretum! Anyway, you need to research on your own,
first. I suggest as one of the easiest to find references
Michael Dirr's book called Manual of Woody Landscape Plants.
Ed Gilman's Trees For Urban and Suburban Landscapes is one
of my favorite tree books, as well. These resources will
guide you as to what you may and may not be able to
successfully use and the prediction as to their adult size.
Don't forget the any good forest has overstory AND understory
trees, so you can plant some of the smaller ones in
between the considerable space you will need to give the
bigger ones.
Remember, too, that you shouldn't plant them shoulder to
shoulder. Their mature canopies should be allowed to grow
without compitition for sun and space.
