Hi,

The answer depends a lot on soils and is usually a function of oxygen in the soil.
In most heavier soils the majority of roots are in the first 600mm (2 feet). Another
useful guideline is to try and move a root plate (root ball) about 10 times greater in
diameter than the diameter if the trunk.
