Dear John,

It is possible to brace crowns of trees to stabilize thema nd reduce the risk of failure. This is done on a tree by tree basis because there may be other faults with the tree. Sometimes, unfortunately, removal is the best advice. whenever possible I put in crown bracing.

The installation of bracing is a highly skilled operation. Most of the systems that I have seen are a waste of maoney and lead people into a false sense of security.

Contact your city forester or a city forester in a larger city to contact a member of the Iowa Arborists Association.
