The syptoms you describe could be any of many problems apples are susceptible to, some serious, some not.

You should endeavor to discover the problem (contact a local arborist or University Ext. agent), so that any replacement planting does not suffer the same demise!

Crabapples are very common, and should be available at any nursery.
