Apple Tree

We have a very old and knarly (sp?) apple tree. Several years ago I pruned it severely, removing dead and crossed branches. It did well, but seldom produced significant apples which was fine - we just liked the blossoms and the shape of the old thing. This summer one of its branches has yellowing leaves and is now bare. Some of the other branches seem to be a yellowing a bit too. Is this the apple tree's swan song, some sort of disease, or just a fluke? Any ideas out there?

If the poor thing is dying, I'd like to replace it with a large crabapple, not an ornamental crab, but one that produces genuine crabapples. Any one know where I might procure such a tree?

Thanks in advance for any help.
