We have a problem with a Wellingtonia suffering extreme stress and major die-back of upper foilage bearing branches. The tree is 22 metres tall with a stem breast height diameter of 1200mm. The tree is positioned in a carpark, well used and block paved above the root system to within 2 metres of the base of the stem. The block paving has been in place for over 15 years. No pest or disease are apparent. Armellaria is not evident at this time. Decline in health was noticed some 3 years ago. A slow decline, but why? Drought stress was considered, but why now?

Answers please.
