Personally, I don't think it makes a lot a difference in the long run, as besides the "tree folk" most people wouldn't know the difference (I have run into more than one person who calls all conifers pines (or spruces) and maples (or oaks)). However, your best bet for trees would be : conifers - spruces, white pines, firs, larch and hemlock . Other pines are fine too, as long as the terrain is appropriate. For example, the interior of BC where is it drier and grassier with Douglas-fir and pine mix would be out of place. Deciduous-wise, poplars, alders, maples (not sugar maple) and some oaks. Nothing too exotic and no palm trees. As a rule, no giant towering, big old trees as the east coast tends towards smaller trees and on coastal sites more windblown as well.
