Dear Jim,

My name is Daniel Bolan and I work for 20th Century Fox Television on
a new one-hour drama called "Strange World". It is produced by some of
the original creators of "The X-files". I am a writers' assistant and
one of our writers is working on a script that will take place on a
ficticious island off the coast of Maine. The trees in the script play
a prominant role in the story. The problem I have is that our show,
like "X-files" before us, will shoot in Vancouver and I need to know if
there are any trees that are indigenous to both regions: Vancouver and
Maine.

In my internet crash-course in tree study (my knowledge of trees goes
as far as Douglas Firs and Lodge Polepines because they were featured in
"Twin Peaks") has told me that trees are mostly regional. For instance,
the Eastern White Pine can be found all over New England and up into
Canada, but I doubt I would have any luck finding it in Vancouver.

To find a tree common to both Vancouver and Maine may be too much to
ask. If this is a case, could you possibly suggest a kind of tree that
our crew will likely encounter while shooting in Vancouver that could
pass for a similar kind of tree in Maine. What I am trying to avoid is
a situation where a tree-guy, like yourself like yourself, watching our
show thinking, "there is no way in hell that forest could be in Maine".

I'd really appreciate a response as soon as is convienient for you.

Regards, Dan
