You are right but more excitingly is if you want to take the time yo
can simply cut into the phloem and not even expose the xylem. This sort
of injury allows no barriers 1,2 and 3 although some trees will produce barrier
4 in response ... but decay does not have a chance and does not get spread.

After testing or as a contact compound try lanolin instead. It has been found
to accelerate cell division in some instances.
