Mark is right in his first paragraph, Safety!! What is the target situation, no target no real hazard. Roots taper rapidly as they extend away from the stem. Given that most tree roots are in the upper 600mm soil horizon, large root severence WILL cause instability and this should be your primary concern. Re-evaluate the situation and explore without damage, where the remaining rooting matrix is. If substantial amounts of the woody/structural rooting matrix has been removed and given the time frame for re-establishment, you may have no option, but to eliminate potential hazard and remove the trees and sue the trenching company. As always, giving advice from several thousand miles away (and others should take this into account), you simply cannot beat a site visit for true evaluation of the situation. As for sueing the party involved in the damage, it would be nice if you guys could adopt our own monetary amenity valuation for trees and woodlands, its works wonders in the UK courtroom.
