Your mention of tree tombs triggered a drowning thought. contained plant sites can leave in the question of effective drainage. I have found when the suspicion of water logging occures a pvc set to beyond the desired aireation of soil will fill with water and another of smaller diameter capped will rise in the event the water level rises. Its a good way to monitor such a problem.
