Dear Jam,

How does the chapter and ISA benefit from anyone collecting ceu's? Maybe I am missing something though. When I attend a seminar I pay a fee for the class. I get ceu's for free. Does the chapter and ISA get a "taste" of my registration $$$ when I send in my note to the ISA? The chapter may gain a few bucks for putting on the seminar but as far as I am aware not from giving ceu's.

The subject of rewarding people for plus thirty ceu's has come up before. Why should there be any effort put into any such system. If people want a "favorite cause" to put their efforts into there are many other worthwhile causes that are much more important to our society.

Homeless shelters
Food shelves
Plant more trees
Community service
Church service
Teaching adults to read
Reading to seniors who can;'t get out of their homes

Use your imagination!

After getting certified several years ago I went about collecting ceu"s and sending in the sheets to the ISA. They dutifully sent back a printout of my collection. In about nineteen months I had collected 68 ceu's and I just quit sending in the sheets. Don't you think that the ISA has better things to do in their office than attending to my "stamp collection". That is what anything beyond thirty becomes. If someone needs campaign ribbons to hang from their shirt as motivation to keep up their ceu's then I think that they are missing the point of an education.

Instead of another reward system, how about putting that same effort into getting more people certified? That isn't as glamorous as handing out "attaboys" to overmotivated arborists. The rewards to the trade and the improvement of our professional image would be enhanced though.

While I am up here on my soapbox, enage me. Don't anyone dare send a response via "guest" or anon!
