Hi Paul,

Whilst I agree with your sentiments it perhaps does not reflect reality.
Unfortunately most of the world has had it's soil raped to some extent.
Whist we agree in Ideal conditions trees do not need fertilisation , it
is unfortunate that many of us live outside of the UK and do silly things
like grow trees as sigle specimens in lawn (thanks to the role modelling
of the rich).

An absolutely essential unit of fertilization is to avoid the agricultural
model, which you so wisely suggest and look to the forest model which is now
gaining force. Because our urban trees are not growing in forest situations
it is important to supplament the short falls.

A brilliant lecturer on this subject is Dr Don Marx and research is being done
by bartlet labs and has been done by USDF on the same issues. If you would like
more info I can give you heaps.
