Double trunk spruce or two trees in one!

I bought a small container grown white spruce for christmas.
Upon inspection I saw that there were actually two spruces.
I called the nursery and she told me to leave it and to not
cut the second tree away from the main spruce,that it might
do more harm than good and stress it.She said they double
plant in case one doesn't grow well. My first thought is to
cut the secondary trunk to the ground, but I've heard that
they can be very nice looking with double trunks. Any
knowlege in this area would be greatly appreciated.
