Bruce,
There is a lot of information, studies and articles in cyberspace
on diversity. You just have to spend some time locating it.
Try going to my web page http://lonestar.texas.net/~rgpena
I have many useful urban forestry links for acquiring
information. The rule of thumb is no more than 10% of any
given genus. I've also heard you should not plant any more
(of a given species) than you can remove and replant in one
year. I encourage diversity and city or communities that
have been devesated by a species specific disease (dutch elm
disease/oak wilt) or insect attack (southern pine beetle)
should too. I have found some articles on diversity and can
snail mail them to you. Just email your mailing address
to rgpena@texas.net
