It sounds like you have either a variety of Honey Locust or a Black Locust. They will likely have irregular heavy fruiting years. There are fruit retardant sprays for trees but they work poorly on the trees for which they were developed, primarily soft fruit trees.

As an arborist I am asked if I could do something about the number of leaves that fall out of peoples' trees. I tell them that their tree may have 500,000 leaves and if I prune it hard it may end up with 300,000, but you would never realize any difference in the amount of cleanup work in the fall. Fruit are in the same category. These are all natural processes and you should just take joy in having a living organism on your landscape that can put on such a magnificent display.
