Sory about that last reply. I'm a tree trimer not a writer. Timing is not critical in our warm weather,but is prefered after a freeze rather than before. Proper thining requires removing any rubing or conflicting wood first, then anything pointing in a direction other than the normal direction of the rest of the tree. Anything starting out in a downward direction will generally turn up later and become conflicting , so take it off now. Next you take off 1/2 to 3/4 or more of what appears to be undesirable at each of the old cutsand leave only the parts growing in a desirable direction
