prunning pecan trees

I have lots of pecan trees that were prunned about ten
years ago by just chopping off pieces that were to long.
They have grown back over the years to have about six
branches grow out where there used to be one. Besides
looking awful, the limbs are exremely weak and a light
wind has been known to break them. In a hurricane
there would be nothing left. When would be the best
time to prune them and what would be the best way to
thin the multi-branch branches? THanks
