You might be able to distinguish the difference based upon the types of trees nearby also. If the oaks in question are growing beneath other oaks in the area then determine if the larger oaks are red or white. Also, generally, you will find white oaks growing beneath the canopy of other trees more often than red oaks as they will tolerate more shade than red oaks. The bark of white oak tends to be a bit more scaly than red oak on small trees also. See other comment.
