The jury (i.e. research) is still out on that question. There is doubt to whether baskets hurt the tree. When in doubt take it off, you can't loose by doing that. I have checked several trees that have died and the baskets that were left on were intertwined by the root crown. The root crown grew around the basket and the basket was actually inside of the root crown wood. This may have stressed the tree to other problems or it may have actually been the cause of death of these trees, not sure. We take all the wire baskets off our trees just the same. Wire also interferes with stump grinding equipment, another good reason to remove it. Sometimes the baskets are exposed and people trip on them. Take them off, why not?
