Matching Logs to Stumps

Does anyone know the easiest way to absolutely match cut logs to stumps that are left behind? It seems intuitive to me that it would be simply by appearance, species type etc., however, the client has to be postively sure that the wood came from this source...any ideas (besides DNA testing)...
