Wire baskets constructed fom galvanised wire corrode very slowly. This results in girdling of roots and potenential poor vigour and instability.

Even non-coated wires can cause health and stability problems as a result of root constriction.

Not sure about the levels of zinc and toxicity.

ps. even root wraps can cause serious constriction of roots when they contain those nicely coloured strands of synthetic fibres.
