At last from somone who has bought and used one and doesn't
sell anything. Yes it gives only a numerical picture. I
have found it accurate in providing a statistical evaluation
of the decay. How you apply this from an engineering
standpoint is how well it stands up in court. The technique
works well on smooth barks without the removal of a plug.
Whilst a plug may need to be removed on rough barks which
can and will cause a wound it does not break barriers all
the way to the decay (how do you handle that in court. The
manufacturers have a Video imaging prototype but say that at
$30K it is never likely to go into production. Still if
you can peform advanced algebra and geometry you can get a
good statistical representation. If you can't do the maths
how do yo propose to do the engineering equations.

I summary a useful, quick and inexpensive aid but as with
all systems limmited in ways. Find one and play with it.
Nothing like experience will aid in the decission.
