Data analysis for urban land restoration.

My MF project concerns the rehabilitation of derelect
urban land previously used for industrial purposes. I am
struggling with the issue of data analysis. I have taken
soil samples, infiltration rates, and placed vegetative
plots in a regular pattern over the site. I want to class-
ify the vegetative data into plant communities and then
relate the communities to soil characteristics in an attempt
to determine if soil characteristics can be attributed to
causing the distribution of the various plant communites
over the site. I am leaning towards using a heirarchical
classification followed by two axis oridnation. I have
access to SPSS statistical software package, does anyone
have suggestions about better tests or software for this
type of problem.
