piered slabs in root zones

I work for a local consent authority and when trees are located
near proposed structures (particularly driveways) developers
seem to be favouring a piered slab for the extent of the affected
root zone. Obviously success is probably species and site
dependant, but as a rule is this technique effective in the
long term? Any articles or references? Does the driveway end
up looking peculiar with suspended sections?
