Boy, is this a subject close to my heart! When I went back
to school to get a degree in hort, I originally planned to
be a poinsettia grower.
The key to longevity is high light. Poinsettias are native to
Mexico and grow in direct sun.
I have mine in a west-facing window, where it receives direct sunlight all afternoon.
Low-light levels result in rapid defoliation (when I worked
for a florist, we used to stick pine branches in the pots
close to Christmas because they had no leaves left!) Keep
them nice and warm and away from drafts.
Like almost all interior plants, they appreciate even moisture
levels. Your finger is the the best sensor. Touch the surface
of the soil and be sure that it stays moist. A good soaking
about twice a week should do it (do NOT let them stand in
water, however).
Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
