ARBORVITAE-THUJA OCCIDENTALIS 'SMARGD'

I planted six arborvitae in April which are approximately 4-5 feet tall and have some new growth.
Unfortunately, four have developed a blackening of the outer foliage in the lower to middle portion of the shrub which eventually turns brown and dies.
Another one still has this blackening foliage now in December.
I live in Long Island, NY. A local nursery advised me in June that this was due to the abundant rainfall we've had and not to water to often.
I've regularly checked for insects (spider mites etc.) but didn't see any.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
