Overwintering Banana Plants

I read on the WWW couple days ago that if you leave your
Banana plants in the ground to over-winter that one should
put a chicken-wire cage around plant ( 1' dia ) and mulch
down the corm to a height of 4 foot. I'm in Houston. What
about 1 foot dia and 2 foot high? Anyone?
