in new york city, i used to kid that crown die back in a
young street tree was diagnotic for identifying ash trees.
in my experience, this type of die back is very common;
usally accompanied by borers. i always assumed it was a lack
of rooting space and water to support the rapidly growing crown
of a young ash. now that i'm in north carolina, i have
seen similar problems on an extensive right of way planting
of ash, but in this case i think there was a provenance problem
with the variety planted. my prescription? whatever cultural
practices that encourage tree health and reduce stress.
