We have been battling the DOT for five years to save a live oak
at the corner of Phelima Road and Jefferson Street, which is known by
many to be the Friendship Oak. The DOT is working on a road widening
project which does not include the big oak which has been there for at
least 300+ years, we brought in a Engineer from Jacksonville, FL to show
a round about which is quicker, safer, and cost less than the DOT's
project and they will not even look at it. The age of the oak has come
up a lot and I'm a Certified Arborist #0119 and I would like for someone
to help us in determining the age of the oak. There is no reason for
them to cut down this beautiful tree. The DOT is costing our tax payers
more and more money with this project such as $10,000 just to have the
contractor standby. They are spending more money to fight to take the
tree down than to leave it. If their is anyone who can help in
determining the age of our Friendship Oak please contact David Edwards,
Jr at 912-435-5988, or D & D Tree Service, Inc at 912-435-6722, or
E-mail at daedward@surfsouth.com. Please someone help us, we are
running out of time..
Thank you,
David Edwards, Jr
