I practiced in Miami, Fl (South Florida) for 6 years. The climate is subtropical, very
humid. I have come across plants that did not possess or possessed very little root system.
In Miami I moved some large 30"dbh Live Oaks
and in preparation had called all over the country seeking some insight into acceptable
methods that could be applied. I came across several interesting Ideas. One was from
talking with Ed Gillman with the University of Florida, He had been envolved with some
studies on the benefits of Misting canopies on transplanted trees. My observation was that
The root systems main purpose was to provide water to the canopy for transpiration that
effectively would maintain the cell temperature at a functioning level. Misting the canopy
for 5 min. in every 20 min. could sustain the food processes. However in long-term
applications some leaching of elements from the leaves does occur. In theory the plant can
when maintained in a sufficiently humid atmosphere could replace the root system. Not
something I would recommend by any means but neverless interesting in regard to root loss
and transplanting.
