I would be interested if you learn of some treatments for the damage.

As to prevention measures,

Scare crow measures have been known to be affective. Rubber snakes, flashy pieces of tinfoil on strings. Birds are known to be made uncomfortable from irregular disturbances.

Perhaps applying a harmless agent such as Soap might prove to be a TASTEfull irritant.
