In regard to saving your Arborvitae
The fibrous roots I know of are associated with grasses and palms. Arborvitae I would
define as woody. They will swell with age (minimally) . The living parts of a plant
continually grow. The parts (leaves stems and roots) grow in proportion to each other.
Large trees above ground have large root systems, small ones small rootsystems. Growing
trees do exert pressures. That pressure will depend upon the size of your Arborvitae and
the room it has. You may however limit growth by pruning. Control the size of your plant
and you will control the size of the root system proportionately. Be careful when pruning
evergreens. Maintain a shape where each limb has its own sunlight area where its leaves
(needles, scales, etc.) will produce its food. Each stem is responsible for its own food. Do
not cut all the leaves off a stem or it may not come back. Stems in decline may not posses
sufficient stored energy to generate new leaves. Easy does it- Prune less but prune more
often. Once the plant is to an acceptable size start pruning the new growth away and
managing it the size you want it to be. The larger it becomes the more difficult it will be to
prune,. Avoid ladders if possible.
