Cabling and pruning for wind resistance are questionable areas to be sure. One should exercise a great deal of caution. The variabilities are seemingly endless. All to often those persons suggesting the work are ill suited to perform it objectively. Their interest I fear is monetarily motivated. Objective Arborist are few and far between. Persons working in this field are known more for exercising thier backs than thier minds. Cabling and pruning for wind resistance does not represent very much of my work. Compared to removals and trimming it would amount to about a drop in a bucket. A big bucket by the way.
I offered up the idea of using straps instead of boring as simply a more preferable way that cabling could be accomplished. I suppose it is the scarcity of this work that has so far inhibited its further development. Since tree are capable of living for hundreds of years Arboricultural practices should be responsive to practices that are respective of that time frame. The necessity to inspect and adjust cabling has troubled me too. Neglect and ignorance or common place. I have been mulling over an idea about incorporating the action and form of Ice Tongs cupled with a threaded rod to act as a limited contact fastener. I believe it would work effectively well and not require any adjustment or maintenance while realizing a minimal disturbance of existing cells and forming cells. I don't think it would take much time or money to develope. I do believe such a device could prove to be a much more responsive treatment. I am however unfamiliar with marketing procedures.
Thanks for explaining about wind vectors. I have never lived or worked with trees that had been exposed to consistant wind directions. I did however exploit and enhance the form of a Live oak on an estate in Miami that appeared wind blown. It however had taken its appearance from sunlight competition by dominant upper canopy trees. They had been removed.
Has anyone an opinion on the use of bleach as a treatment of wounds?
