pits and planters

I am working with a community doing a downtown streetscape
project. I am curious in how other towns install tree pits
(sometimes referred to as cut outs)
and planters and if there is anyone that has had success with a
particular technique. I am also wondering if anyone is familar
with the long term maintenance issues associated with brick
shared root zones.
