Safers Soap

I recently sprayed a Prunus cerasifera 'Atropurpurea' for control of an aphid feeding frenzy. The aphids were controlled as well many of the leaves. Leaf loss of 35% to 40%. Ouch! I sprayed according to directions on a overcast period, (couple of days). This is the second time that this has happened to me and I question the use of safers soap on individual species or my ability. Have brother arborists encountered this type of result with safers soap as well?
