The Marl hitch or half hitch does back up a running bowline rigged the way explained. It DOES NOT reduce the amount of shock loading and does not reduce the distance of free fall of the block of wood. This is a common myth that has been proven to be false. Ken Palmer and Pete PHD(can't remember his last name) gave a demo at TCI expo in Baltimore in Nov. that showed this beyond any shadow of a doubt. I held this same mis-conception until two months ago.
Rig a small piece on the groung and try it for yourself. It's a simple test to perform. Sorry to step on anyone's toes.
