hornets where do they go and how do they come back?

A coworker and myself went thruogh a lot of trouble in order to snatch a hornet nest today.being the dead of winter they were all gone and i was just wondering where in the world do they go?I'm sure they die off in the winter but when they come back where do they come back from?
