Are you using the footloops from New Tribe? They make a setup like what you describe. Try attaching the center ringof the ascenders to the tie in d-ring on your saddle with a small Maillon Rapide screw link. That way you will be supported by your butt or leg strap just like a climbing line.
Since last spring I have been using SRT exclusively to access trees. If my tie-in crotch is at the level that I will be working I just send a running bowline up to choke the limb. Then, when I get to the crotch, I set my cambium saver and continue working.
If the tie-in crotch is higher than where I will be working I set my cambium saver and rope like normal but pull down enough rope to end at the height that I will work from. Now, tie a secure loop knot, figure eight on a bite, bowline on a bite, or your favorite. Clip in a double locking STEEL biner or MR screw link. Why steel? Because you will be running the straight biner up to a round surface, the limb. This can make the biner bend and put a strong load on the gate. Run the whole works up to the rings on your cambium saver and ascend the long end of the rope. When you get to the height than you are going to work, safety in with your flip line, and pull down the short end of the rope to tie-in.
For footlocking I attach my CMI ascender to my front d-ring with a double locking biner. At the bottom of the ascender there are two holes. I clip into the one on the handle side. I tied a sling of accessory cord and girth hitch it the bottom hole on the cam side. Thread the sling through the hole at the top, just above the cam. Tie an overhand knot above the ascender. This locks the sling to the ascender. After clipping the ascneder to the belt, clip onto the climbing rope. Slip your thumb through the top loop of the accessory cord and grip the rope. As you footlock, you just slide your hands up the rope and the ascender follows in one motion. By adjusting the lenght of the sling, you will not wste any motions or spend much time in the muscle burning chin up position. Pretty close to rope walking and much simpler.
For long ascents I have used a chest ascender and a foot ascender but I don't like to have to send all of that paraphenalia back down.
Be careful about using a retreivable false crotch to climb from. If the rope has a pulley on the end, drapes through a crotch and is tied off at the ground this will double the load on the crotch. In other words, if the climber weighs 200 pounds, the crotch and limb must be strong enough to hold 400 pounds.
Strong limbs and snug ropes!
