For long ascents nothing beats the footlock or a pulley aided belayed free climb...
There is a technique where you use a friction saver as a false crotch, set a line through that with a throw line still in place. Snap one end on your saddle and place a gri-gri also in your saddle D-ring. place the line in the gri-gri and then a micoscender above the gri-gri with the throwline being placed onto the cam of the microscender with a knot(so you can fairlead the microscender up the line).Place a small pulley on the microscender, feed your line through the pulley down to the ground. This is a big mechanical advantage for ascending and working for myself...It sounds wierd put if you put the system together you'll see that it does work.
