The rope climbing device was called a "lock jack". It has no moving parts and is used to ascend and descend. The lockjack replaces a prussic or taught line hitch when body thrusting. When static, the climbers weight causes a bend in the line at the device much like a climbing knot. By pulling down on a short line from the lock jack the device rotates taking some of the bend out of the rope enableing the climber a controlled descent.

When used to ascend the lock jack self advances and locks as soon as weight is applied.

No, I havn't bought one yet.
