Is it possible to save my tree???

So glad to have found you folks!
I have a beautiful healthy pin (I think) oak in my back yard.
I have been told it is about 60 years old. I don't know how tall it stands but it is massive and wonderfully symmetrical.

The Problem is this..I MUST add on to my house. I could go up (but probably more expensive) and back a little or back a lot--which is my first choice. The tree stands approx. 16 feet from the back of my house. I would like to go out 14 feet --- how much if any damage will this do to the tree?

If I go up and back I would probably go back about 8 - 10 feet. I would also have to trim off several of the lower branches.

If it makes any difference... about 12 - 13 feet from the house there is a drop (gradual) of about 3 feet.

Is there any way that I can make the improvements on my house and still keep the tree? It is the only tree I have in my yard.

Thanks for any advice you might be able to give!
